LinoLetter 2010/01

New year, new decade, new fonts

! Welcome to the Current Issue of the LinoLetter ! Subscribe Unsubscribe
Veljovic Script
Serbian-born and Hamburg-based designer Jovica Veljovič is a designer with decades of experience as a calligrapher, typeface developer, and professor. Last year, we released Libelle™, his take on the English Copperplate genre. We are pleased to kick Off 2010 with an even more ambitious design: Veljovic Script™.
An informal, brush-style calligraphic typeface family, Veljovic Script’s fonts contain more than 1,000 alternates. Its letters are dynamic, but do not connect. The typeface family includes four weights: Light, Regular, Medium, and Bold. The Bold weight is particularly alluring, with strong forms cutting across the surface of the page or screen. Veljovic Script is also multi-script, containing both Latin and the Cyrillic characters.

Arian
Linotype is pleased to publish Naghi Naghashian’s first typeface. Meet Arian™, a new Arabic script family. Created with today’s technology in mind, Arian is suitabile for multiple applications. When filtered or skewed in Photoshop® or Illustrator® the type retains its clear readability, thanks in large part to the formal reduction applied to its letterforms’ design. When Arian is used on paper or on screen, it is extremely legible at small sizes. Furthermore, Arian may be artificially obliqued in InDesign, without any diminishment in quality of the manipulated text. With the highest degree of geometric clarity, and the necessary amount of calligraphic references, Arian offers a fine balance between the calligraphic Arabic tradition and the contemporary sans serif aesthetic now common in Latin typography. Arian is a quite versatile Arabic family, with five fonts to offer: Light, Regular, Demi, Bold, and Heavy.

Sarah Script and WTF Portfolio
Every month in the LinoLetter’s “Don’t Forget” category, we link to two of the many font foundries whose products are distributed via Linotype.com. This January, we highlight Borges Lettering and the Wilton Foundry. If you like our new Veljovic Script, you might also be interested in additional script faces from these two companies: Sarah and WTF Portfolio.
Sarah is our favorite Borges Lettering typeface. It is a quick, dynamic script face, with letters that connect and feel very brushy and lively. From the Wilton Foundry’s products, one of the most noteworthy fonts is an English Copperplate face named WTF Portfolio. Its letters are the sorts of thing that you find on formal, old-fashioned documents. Perhaps it will remind you of some of the letters in your dad’s stock market portfolio.

Book recommendation
A new edition of Letterfontein has been published! At more than 640 pages, this excellent reference is currently only available in Dutch, but boy, is it a beauty. Joep Pohlen describes the development of western typography and typefaces, with an emphasis on the typefaces. The center of the book is devoted to lavish settings of the classic book faces, but a number of alternatives are also suggested.
